Pizzeria in Hagen
Gabbiano has been part of Hagen’s Haldener Straße since 1996, diagonally opposite Fachhochschule Südwestfalen. Owner Vincenzo Russo explains the name as the Italian word for seagull. In a 2017 interview with the university magazine Impuls, he described his move from studying statistics to running a pizzeria.
From helping out to taking over
His cousin opened the business. Russo initially helped there before leaving his statistics course in Dortmund after the third semester and taking over the pizzeria. In the interview, he also described its connection with the university: students were among his customers and recognised him outside the restaurant.
Three sizes of stone-oven pizza
Gabbiano bakes stone-oven pizza in 25, 32 and 55 centimetre diameters. Pizza Enzo combines tuna, hot peppers, onions and olives on tomato and cheese. The namesake Pizza Gabbiano comes with shrimp and garlic sauce. Oregano is included on the pizzas. Dough and sauces are made using the family’s own recipes.
Pasta and contact details
Spaghetti Bosco uses olive oil, fresh mushrooms and fresh tomatoes. Duetto combines oven-baked lasagne and cannelloni; the cannelloni contain spinach and minced meat. Each salad comes with a house-made dressing, with vinegar and oil available instead.
